The "summer slide"

What is the "summer slide"

The “summer slide” is the learning loss that students can experience when out of school.

What are the statistics of "summer slide" occurring?

Research indicates 2 months of reading skills and 2 1/2 months of math skills are lost by students over a single summer.

How does summer learning help students?

High-quality summer learning programs improve academic achievement and readiness to learn.  Summer learning can also help students feel prepared for the next step in their academic journey.

How does a parent help stop summer learning loss ("summer slide")?

Students benefit from keeping a regular daily schedule, being provided options for creative activities and reading at least 20 minutes daily. These opportunities will help prevent summer learning loss, to encourage your child ‘s readiness to return to school in the fall.

About the Camp

Set Sail for Reading Camp will provide multisensory learning experiences to help students entering grades 2-6 strengthen their reading, spelling and writing skills while having fun.

The camp will implement the multisensory Orton Gillingham instructional approach in which students are taught by seeing, saying, sounding, and writing letters to master decoding and encoding of words.

This approach works well for students with dyslexia and other reading disabilities.

Guided by specially trained staff, Set Sail for Reading Camp students are engaged as learners in small group, hands-on lessons and activities using BLS (reading and spelling curriculum), written expression and organized games.

Set Sail for Reading Camp curriculum will be adapted to meet the needs of students to ensure that each child experiences school success.
